Harness Your Own Power: The Law of Attraction (E45)

Three Proven Ways to Get What You Want in Life

Why is it that some people seem to live the dream while others struggle? Can you determine your fate? This week’s episode explores the power of the Law of Attraction. We also discuss three ways you can harness that power to get your dream job and life.

The Law of Attraction – Like Attracts Like

Have you ever met someone who just seems to have it all? A perfect job, house, marriage… life?

That’s what we all want, right? But how can we make it happen? What’s the one thing that differentiates those who are doing the work they love from those who aren’t?

I think it’s that they believe they deserve to live their dream. They believe they have what it takes to be successful. They believe their talents are amazing and should be shared with everyone. That’s not rocket science, right? But it is a form of science, a pseudoscience if you will. It’s the Law of Attraction.

“The Law of Attraction is the idea that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts a person brings positive or negative experiences into their life.”

If you’ve ever met someone who has harnessed the power of the Law of Attraction, you’ve probably heard them say “like attracts like.” They spend their energy and focus their thoughts on only those things that they want or desire – and not on any of the things they don’t want. Putting so much focus on the the things they want most helps align their decisions, behaviors, and life to bring all the things they want into their life.

How can we harness this power? During my work creating Spark U, I spent a lot of time focusing on helping you create the professional life you’ve always been dreaming of. I believe to do that, you need to harness the power of the Law of Attraction. Here are three ways:

#1 – If You Name It, It Will Come

To get your dream job, you need to name your dream job. You need to know the title of your job, say it out loud, and name the type of work that you want to do and the results that you want to see. Be as specific as possible.

For example, a lawyer might say, “I want to work on the Sampson case because I can show off my technical knowledge and be more visible to the firm’s partners.”

There are two things going on in that statement: the lawyer is naming what she wants. She’s noting how great her technical skills are, but also that she wants recognition from leadership. She knows she has the knowledge to hit it out of the ballpark, and that in doing so, she’ll get even more great opportunities.

Without ever naming these desires aloud, how could this lawyer start to make decisions and change her behavior so that she gets the opportunity to work on the Sampson case – and then on to bigger and better opportunities in the future?

Naming your desires is a crucial component to jump-starting the Law of Attraction in your life.

#2 – Zealously Proclaim Your Passions & Goals

It’s not just about naming what you want – you must declare that name with passion and energy. An unenthusiastic goal is rarely met.

Maybe you know what you’re good at and you have an idea for how you can manifest that passion in the workplace. Your zealous proclamation might be, “I love connecting people. I have a great idea for creating a system that helps the team share information in real time.” Though your current job might not allow you to do this 100% of the time, displaying your passion and enthusiasm will help you find opportunities to work on connecting people 5%, 10% or maybe even 25% of the time.

Maybe your zealous statement is, “I’m passionate about essential oils. I want every child in my Pre-K class to understand the benefits of essential oils.” You might know exactly the result you want. You’re not sure how you’ll make that happen but you’re passionate. Sharing that passion aloud will help you connect with like-minded people who can help this dream become a reality.

How can you work your passions and goals into your professional life a little bit at a time? How can you create this space for your dream job in your current job?  All of these zealous proclamations give you that space. They harness the Law of Attraction because you’re naming what you want.

#3 – Create a Vision Board

If you’re a visual person, you may also want to create a vision board.

A vision board is a pictorial representation of the people and things you want in your life. It shows how you see your future; it’s a visual representation of your aspirations.

Pinterest is a great place to build vision boards, since you can create a digital, permanent, easily changeable vision board in a short amount of time. We talked about the power of vision boards and Pinterest back in Episode 22, and I shared my “Find Your Passion” board.

You can also create your vision board in real life, of course. All it takes is a few favorite magazines and newspapers, a cork board, and some craftiness. Within a few hours, you can have a tangible vision board to hang in your home office or bedroom.

When it comes to building a vision board for your career, it’s important to build a board that focuses on the aspects of the job and life you want. Do you wear fashionable clothes to work for your dream job? Include clippings or pins of those outfits. Do you travel for work, or work in an exotic location? Include that too!

The vision board encapsulates your dreams about your dream job, and all aspects of it. Every time you face a tough decision or see a new opportunity – refer to your vision board! It can guide you to make decisions in line with what you want, thus harnessing the power of the Law of Attraction.
