What is Positive Psychology?

Scientific Study of What Makes Life Most Worth Living

Positive Psychology

Unlike more traditional psychology practices, positive psychology focuses on building human strength and well-being, instead of treating mental illness.

Founded by Martin E.P. Seligman, PhD, and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, PhD, the field of positive psychology focuses on well-being and the strengths and virtues that allow humans to thrive.

Although some psychologists studied happiness and optimism in the past, the field of psychology itself was disproportionately focused on treating mental illness rather than encouraging mental health.

Positive psychology focuses on well-being, happiness, mindfulness and psychological strength — and how these elements are related to both mental and physical health.
